Grow. Strong. (part 5): The Spiritual Practice of Worship, Pastor David Welch

June 30, 2024

You have to train for it.

A Sample List of Spiritual Practices:

Reading-studying-memorizing Scripture, fasting, prayer, silence, solitude, simplicity, meditation, serving, giving, sabbath rest, spiritual community, practicing humility, and tons more.

1 “O come, let us sing for joy to the Lord, Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. 3 For the Lord is a great God And a great King above all gods, 4 In whose hand are the depths of the earth, The peaks of the mountains are His also. 5 The sea is His, for it was He who made it, And His hands formed the dry land. 6 Come, let us worship and bow down, Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. 7 For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.”

Psalm 95:1-7 (NASB1995)

The Idea:

You are called to an eternal preoccupation with God (A.W. Tozer).

That is the practice of worship.

Learning worship is about how you think about God, how you feel toward Him, and how you respond to Him.

The Practice of Worship

I. What is it?

1 “O come, let us sing for joy to the LORD,

Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.

2 Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving,

Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

3 For the LORD is a great God

And a great King above all gods,”

Psalm 95:1-3 (NASB1995)

Worship is three things together.

1. It is a way you think about God – worth and wonder

2. It is a way that you feel about God – adoration

3. It is a way that you respond to God – surrender offer yourself to him

II. What Does It Do in You

“For He is our God,

And we are the people of His pasture

and the sheep of His hand."

Psalm 95:7 (NASB1995)

III. How To Practice It

Practicing Worship is:

How you practice THINKING about God

How you practice FEELING about God

How you practice RESPONDING to God

Thinking should lead to wonder

Feeling should lead to adoring

Responding should lead to offering

Make the goal of every practice – to worship Him.
