Forgive (part 2): The forgiving steps, David Welch

November 10, 2024

“Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions.”

Mark 11:25 (NASB1995)

3 “Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. 4 “And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ forgive him.” 5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”

Luke 17:3-5 (NASB1995)

The Idea:

Giving another true forgiveness is costly, that fully releases another from their debt to you, it’s costly. But it is the only way to tear down the prison you unintentionally build around your own heart.

The forgiving steps

I. See Yourself

“Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions.”

Mark 11:25 (NASB1995)

8 “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever.

10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.

11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;

12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

13 As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

14 For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.”

II. Pay the Debt

Mark 11:25   “… forgive …”

Luke 17:3   “… forgive him …”

III. Will the Good

27 “But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

Luke 6:27-28 (NASB1995)

IV. Do the Work

27 “But I say to you who hear, LOVE your enemies, DO GOOD to those who hate you,

28 BLESS those who curse you, PRAY for those who mistreat you.”

Luke 6:27-28 (NASB1995)
