Becoming (part 9): Self-Control, Pastor David Welch

December 4, 2022

Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

THE IDEA:

Self-control is choosing the desires that give you life, fullness, wholeness and joy.

Self-Control Operating in You

I. What is self-control?

"But the fruit of the Spirit is … self-control;"

Galatians 5:22-23 (NASB1995)

“No (one) can live without delight. This is why (one) deprived of spiritual joy goes over to carnal pleasures.”

– Thomas Aquinas, 13th century Theologian

II. How does it grow?

"Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. "

Galatians 5:24 (NASB1995)

III. What will make it powerful in me?

"If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit."

Galatians 5:25 (NASB1995)

"I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit."

"... being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance … "
