First Devotional, Day 11: God Gives True Rest

February 19, 2024

DAY 11

Key Verse:

“Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Matthew 11:28-29 NASB

Have you ever been somewhere and needed to send a short text or make a quick phone call and to your horror and dismay, your cell phone is dead? Sometimes, if we are honest, we live our lives like we are a cell phone. We always have multiple things going on and we attempt to “recharge” at night, but never feel like we are back to 100% capacity as we begin a new day. Or maybe your exhaustion lies in the feeling that you are never able to live up to an impossible standard or do enough to make Jesus love you.

Jesus knows our limitations and our tendency to become exhausted quickly as human beings. He knows how we are prone to focus on the wrong things sometimes. How do we know this? He gives a powerful promise in Matthew 11:28-29 that if we come to Him, He will give us rest. Now, Jesus is not primarily referring to physical rest, although that is very important. He wants to give our souls rest. Instead of simply following the rules so that we can be good with God, we can rest in what Jesus did on the cross for us. Ultimately, we can have the rest and security of knowing that regardless of what comes our way, He is in control.

When we go to Jesus, He promises us true rest. Doesn’t that sound amazing? Do not let anything stop you from pursuing true rest from Jesus today!

Heart Prompts

  1. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your level of physical/emotional/spiritual exhaustion?

  2. What are some ways that you could come to Jesus and seek His true rest?

  3. Is there anything in your life that you should remove to pursue Jesus more fully?

Pray

Dear God, help me to pursue your true rest today. I desire to focus on experiencing you fully and completely. Thank you for dying on the cross for me and giving me the chance to have a relationship with you. Help me to remove anything getting in the way of knowing you more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
