"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
Jesus Christ, the son who was given, came as the suffering servant but reigns now as King. He is given these names that describe His character, the one we focus on today being “Prince of Peace”. Jesus being the Prince of Peace means that He is the bringer of peace, the sustainer of peace, and the completer of peace. By Christ’s work on the cross He made peace. The blood of Jesus pays the penalty of sin that God has rightly judged. Sin and death has been made for and we can have ultimate peace with God. In Christ we see peace sustained by the ongoing work of the gospel on our hearts. The hope of the gospel gives us peace in the midst of difficulty. Christ is the completer of peace because He restores all things and brings about ultimate peace upon his return. Christ is the only giver of true peace. Peace should be a direct outflow of our faith in Christ because we rely on the one who owns and provides all things.
Lord, give me peace that is found solely in you. Guide my heart in your Word so that no circumstance brings about fear or anxiety. Ultimately, give me confidence in the future glorification, where there will be peace forever and ever. Amen.
