Advent Devotional: Loving King

December 20, 2024

And he said to me, These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent His angel to show His servants what must soon take place. “And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the word of the prophecy of this book.”

For our final day of the week we come to the final words of Scripture. The focus of our time has been on King Jesus and awaiting His return. Now we dwell upon the words that were revealed to the apostle John, the final words of encouragement and hope to all believers, “I am coming soon.” King Jesus is coming again to consummate His kingdom. He encourages His followers with the truth that He is coming, this reality means that He is alive, active, and sovereign. Serving a King that is alive, active, and sovereign should give the subjects of that kingdom hope! Also, the fact that our King encourages us to carry on slows His ultimate love and care for His people, the encouragement of the Second Coming of Christ is followed by a command for believers. We are not to sit idly while we await the Second Coming of Christ, we have the will of our King to be carried out. Jesus says to “[keep] the words of the prophecy of this book.” We are to faithfully carry out the work of Christ by proclaiming Christ as King and declaring to all that they need to be reconciled to God through Christ. Our declaration of the gospel message comes with the exhortation to prepare yourself to meet the coming King, because, “Behold, [He is] coming soon!”

Lord, lead my heart to believe you are returning and give me the desire to see many souls know you and love you. Grant me the grace to work for the good of many, that they may be prepared for the day of your coming!
