Advent Devotional: Joy & Humility

"Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

Mary was a humble peasant girl with a pure heart, who deeply loved the Lord. When the angel Gabriel told Mary she would be the mother of Jesus, the Messiah, she refused to let fear make her feel overwhelmed (Luke 1:26-38). Mary’s humility helped her stay focused on God’s ability to use her in His plan to offer salvation to the world. She didn’t come up with reasons why it’d never work. She just humbly replied, “may it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). There’s a deeply satisfying joy in that kind of humility.

God wants that kind of humility in you, so that He can use you, and bless you, most greatly. Pride always gets in the way, but the answer is found in dying to self. When we keep our eyes on Jesus, the Holy Spirit helps us want what our Heavenly Father wants, more than whatever we want. Great joy is found when you “regard one another as more important than /yourself/” (Philippians 2:3).

Oh Lord, help me humble myself before You. You are so perfect and Almighty. I am so sinful and weak. Please help me embrace Your grace to live humbly, considering other’s needs as more important than my own. I want to be used by You to accomplish things that You esteem with eternal value. Help me become more like You, so that lost souls will yearn to have what I have in my relationship with You. Help me show others I sincerely care. Help me have the humble attitude of a servant, like Mary, for You are worthy. I worship and exalt You as my Lord and forever King.
