Advent Devotional: Hope from Despair

December 6, 2023

"There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit."

Isaiah prophesied a “shoot from Jesse”. By the time of Isaiah’s prophecy, the family of Jesse, Father of David, was waning. The leaders of Judah and Israel were regularly disobedient to the Lord and rejected him as God. They consistently chose idolatry. So, Isaiah’s prophecy of a “shoot from the stump of Jesse” is characterized by wisdom, knowledge, delight in the fear of the Lord, righteousness, justice, and faithfulness. This type of King from the line of David would be a breath of fresh air for the people. The content between the True King, Jesus Christ, and all the kings that had led Judah and Israel is drastic. This prophecy tells us of the perfect character of the Messiah. The attributes given of the Messiah show us the holiness of Christ, which is then confirmed by the message of the gospels. This fulfillment of prophecy drives us to gaze upon the glory of God in Christ Jesus.

Father, lead us to gaze upon your glory in the form of Jesus Christ. Christ made the glory of the invisible God visible to us. Help me to dwell upon Christ as my glorious King and help me to submit my life to your purposes.
